Coming together one by one
One, Two, Ta-Da!— A new culture begins
Hyakuyozu—the “hundred-way graphic”—is a new symbol embodying the values of Hyakuyo cherished by Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores. Hyakuyo a hundred ways, was inspired by layering four perspectives: History, Locally Grounded, Transience, and The Human Touch.
Through long-standing history, two department stores each nurtured their own traditions. In 2007 they came together, and in 2010, they became Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores. Both had long been committed to respecting their customers and to putting the needs of society first. Tradition gives rise to the new, and the new becomes universal. Taking up the baton from those who went before us, we hold it high and keep the traditions going.
Fifteen stores nationwide: Sapporo, Tokyo, Ueno, Shizuoka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Takatsuki, Umeda, Shinsaibashi, Kobe, Ashiya, Suma, Shimonoseki, Hakata, Kochi. Each store is like a flagship, rooted in local lifestyle and culture. Focusing on a 20 km radius and looking to the next 400 years from their own doorsteps, they build each day upon the last. Wonderful culture can be created without rare materials or advanced tools.
Department stores are cultural crossroads—places where cultures overlap, generating countless cultural elements. In Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores, something new is happening on each floor every day. Each visit unveils changes and new discoveries.
A department store is a place where people think deeply and act with great courtesy to ensure an individual’s happiness. Beauty, richness, and deliciousness cannot be measured by a single scale. Because each person is different and unique, we will continue to provide services that only humans can provide.

The patterns on Daimaru and Matsuzakaya shopping bagsare all extracted from Hyakuyozu, or the hundred-way graphicThe two designs are like brothers and sisters—similar but different.Different, yet connectedLike Daimaru and Matsuzakaya
Daimaru’s green shopping bag and Matsuzakaya’s blue shopping bag. Both patterns were created by layering colored paper cut into identical shapes.
The left half of Hyakuyozu was designed for Daimaru and the right half for Matsuzakaya. A single graphic brings them together—harmonizing their distinctive identities.
The paper was layered one by one by hand, photographed, and the resulting pattern was made into a shopping bag. Photographs of the paper capture its texture and subtle shadows, which become part of design.
Paper is familiar to everyone, and so are simple square and circle shapes. Hyakuyozu turns them into countless patterns as the new symbol for Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores. Large, medium, and small bags each present Hyakuyo a hundred faces.
